The Jewish district cemetry of Jugenheim i. Rhh. served the Jewish rural community of Jugenheim as well as the Jewish rural communities of the surrounding villages of Essenheim, Nieder-Saulheim, Partenheim, Stadecken and Vendersheim as a central burial place for several centuries.

This genealogical database was set up as a part of a project measure of the Jugenheim i. Rhh. municipality aimed at systematically recording and documenting the burials in the Lewis cemetry.

The project measure participates in the ViLE project "Jewish Cemeteries in Germany and Neighbouring Countries"(www.juedische-friedhoefe.info).

Genealogical documentation

Based on the gravestones that can still be found today, the database documents the genealogical tables Jewish families and individuals. The civil records archives of the Nieder-Olm and Wörrstadt municipalities serve as the data source for the collection of birth, marriage and death data.

For the deceased who could be identified on the basis of the German grave inscriptions, the gravestones are shown and their location on the grounds of the cemetery is indicated. The deceased whose gravestones are exclusively in the Hebrew language are included in the genealogical database after the grave inscriptions have been translated. In these cases, the indications on the gravestones, which describe the date of death, the components of the name (... son/daughter/wife of ...) and the place of death, serve as clues for the the individual assigment to the civil register entries.
